Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of Edible Flower, Speciality and Micro Leaf Growers

Have you ever wondered what it takes to get our vibrant Micro Leaves, delicate Edible Flowers and flavoursome Speciality Leaves and Sea Herbs from our glasshouses to your kitchen? It’s a journey that involves precision, dedication, and a team that runs like a well-oiled machine.

We’re pulling back the curtain to give you an exclusive look into a typical day at Westlands UK, where freshness and quality are at the heart of everything we do.

Of course, we can’t include every detail involved in growing our awesome produce (some of it’s top secret!), but here are some highlights…

An Early Start at Westlands HQ

Long before the sun is fully up, our headquarters is already buzzing with activity. The day begins bright and early as our dedicated team arrives to start the meticulous process of picking and packing. The first priority is fulfilling the orders placed the previous day.

That’s why we offer next-day delivery for orders placed before 11am Monday to Thursday. This promise is made possible by our morning crew, who work efficiently to gather each item.

From Our Glasshouse to Your Doorstep

To guarantee that your order arrives as fresh as when it left our glasshouses, we use specially-designed cool, insulated packaging. We understand the delicate nature of our products and the importance of maintaining their “just-picked” quality.

So, our recyclable packaging maintains a stable, low temperature throughout the delivery journey, protecting the produce from temperature fluctuations that could compromise its texture, flavour, and appearance.

Upholding Quality in the Glasshouses

While the packing team is busy, another crucial part of our daily operation is happening in the glasshouses. This is where the magic of growing happens, and maintaining the perfect environment is a science we take very seriously. A key component of this is our commitment to water quality.

The Importance of Pure Water

We harvest rainwater to irrigate our produce. It’s cleaned using UV and Ozone before it meets our produce. Still, our team conducts regular water sample tests throughout the glasshouses.

By testing the water, we ensure our produce is receiving the purest hydration possible, free from any impurities that could affect their growth or taste.

The Packhouse: A Symphony of Efficiency

As produce is harvested from our glasshouses throughout the day, it makes its way to the packhouse via our automated systems. The packhouse is the central hub where everything comes together. It runs like clockwork – a testament to the skill and coordination of our team.

From Harvest to Box

Using both automated processes and the human touch, our produce is sorted, weighed and packed into its specific packaging in our packhouse. These punnets are then placed into larger delivery boxes, each one labelled and organised depending on the range, ready for dispatch. This flow from harvest to packed box ensures minimal handling and maximum freshness.

Experience the Westlands UK Difference

From the early morning pickers to the diligent packers and the quality control experts in our glasshouses, every member of the Westlands UK team plays a vital role in delivering the quality you expect.
