SUSTAINABLE GROWING

AT WESTLANDS

A 360 DEGREE APPROACH FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWING

Thriving crops, flourishing culture.

We’re passionate about sustainable growing and looking after our planet and its resources. That’s why we do whatever we can to sustainably grow our delicious range of Micro Leaves, Edible Flowers, Sea Vegetables, Speciality Tomatoes and Inspired Leaves. It’s all about having a healthy and thriving business without compromising on our next generation’s enjoyment of the natural resources around us.

Sustainable growing is not only the right thing to do, but also results in better and, in our opinion, more delicious produce!

As a family-owned, multi-generational business, operating with a thoughtful approach at every step of the growing process is not only the right thing to do, but it also results in better produce.

Mindful packaging.

Whilst we’re passionate about the wide range of products which we grow at our UK nurseries, we also take a lot of care into the sustainability of our packaging.

Our standard punnets are made from RPET material which is made from 100% recycled content – the most environmentally friendly and widely recycled material type in the UK. This material is 100% food safe and can be recycled after usage. The new packaging for our Wheels (pictured right) is made from 100% recycled material and is also fully recyclable.

A deep dive into our water systems.

We use raw water wherever possible and only ‘top up’ the system with mains water when we need to. Not only is this free, but it’s also low in unhelpful elements such as chloride and sulphates.

To promote sustainable growing, as much raw water as possible is harvested. All water needs to be filtered, cleaned and sanitised using either UV or ozone before it is used to grow our produce.

We add nutrients to our treated water to get the optimal growth from our plants. At the point of use, we add a final sanitising element to the water which helps to keep the pipework clean and ensure that our water is as clean as possible when it meets our crops. We take samples of our water on a regular basis to understand the nutrient profile at all stages of the system. As well as this, we monitor the waters’ microbiological content to ensure we are keeping potential pathogens at bay. With our combination of high-tech hydroponic growing and traditional glasshouse soil growing, we can ensure maximum use of our water resources.

To further enhance our sustainable growing methods, we are making investments in our water resources.

Water is a precious resource, which is why we are working towards having all water, including rainwater, stored in covered tanks. Watch this space!

Soil and peat free zone.

We use recycled fabric offcuts to grow our range of Micro Leaves in, rather than soil. Not only does this give the fabric a new lease of life, but it also provides an absorbent, soft and effective home for our leaves as they grow.

This is the future of growing!

Quality produce you can trust.

We are members of LEAF Marque (Linking the Environment and Farming), an environmental assurance system, recognising more sustainably farmed products. Using an Integrated Crop Management strategy throughout our growing sites, we introduce beneficial predatory insects and mites to help control pests.

We work hard to maintain and exceed high expectations so that, when you choose us, you know you’re choosing the best. Accredited by Red Tractor, we can confidently assure that our British-grown products, from Edible Flowers to Speciality Tomatoes, are 100% traceable.
